Muscle building: The basics

Muscle building is the goal with the longest time horizon. The items on this page are products taken daily over weeks and months, not products for a single training session. This selection is a range recommendation, not a performance guarantee.

What's on this page – and what's elsewhere

Here you will find weight gainers, muscle builders, testo products as well as botanical supplements such as ashwagandha, maca, tribulus, and ZMA. What they have in common is the intake pattern: daily, over a longer period, regardless of whether you are training.

Proteins and protein bars are intentionally not listed here, but in their own categories; they are the basic supply for every goal, not a product for this specific one. You can find creatine under Strength & Performance because it is used in connection with training; however, it is also taken daily.

In what order

If you are just starting out, this order is worth following, from the broadest foundation to the most specific supplement:

  1. Protein intake throughout the day. This is not a product question, but a nutritional one. If you cover it with powder, the selection is under Whey Protein.

  2. One product from this selection, not three. Individually, you can judge what works for you; in a package, it's impossible to tell them apart.

  3. Everything else later. Supplements you cannot justify cost money and cause confusion.

Honestly classified

No product builds muscle on its own. The fundamentals are training, nutrition, sleep, and consistency over months; nutritional supplements supplement both, they do not replace them and are not a shortcut.

This applies especially to this category. No health claims are authorized in the EU for botanical extracts such as ashwagandha, maca, or tribulus; what is circulating about them does not come from the authorization process. We therefore do not write anything about what these products do, but only about what is inside them: plant part, standardization, quantity. You can check these details.

Those who combine supplements should watch out for overlaps in individual ingredients. And those who start with products before training and nutrition are in place are just shifting the order, not the result.

What to look for when comparing

Detailed buying criteria can be found in the respective categories; here is the short version: For gainers, the protein content counts, not the calorie count on the front. For plant extracts, the plant part and standardization count. And in both cases, the price per daily dose counts, not the pack price.

Matching categories

For protein supply: Proteins and Whey Protein. Around training: Creatine, pre-workout boosters, and amino acids. As a snack on the go: protein bars.
