What is Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form of vitamin D that the body can produce itself in the skin with the help of sunlight. In small amounts, it is also found in foods such as fatty fish. As a dietary supplement, vitamin D3 is mainly offered as drops (in oil), capsules, or tablets.

Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function. In addition, vitamin D3 plays an important role in calcium absorption in the body. As "Vitamin D3", "D3" or "sun vitamin", it is one of the most well-known and popular individual vitamins.

Why is Vitamin D3 often supplemented?

The body's own production of vitamin D depends heavily on sunlight. In the winter months, there is little suitable solar radiation available in northern latitudes, and even those who spend a lot of time indoors produce less. This is precisely why many turn to a vitamin D3 supplement during this time to supplement their intake and support their supply during months with less sun.

Whether and in what amount a supplement makes sense for you can best be clarified individually – if in doubt, through a medical examination, for example, via a blood test. As a rough guide, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends 800 I.U. or 20 µg daily for adults. For specific dosing, follow the information on the product packaging.

Vitamin D3 & K2

Many products combine vitamin D3 with vitamin K2. Vitamin K supports calcium regulation so that calcium remains in the bones. Vitamin D3 and K2 are often chosen together because the combination can improve bioavailability. This combination is common and is often offered together. Whether you choose a pure D3 product or a D3+K2 combination is an individual decision – the ingredient list shows you what is included. For MK-7, the all-trans form and the K2VITAL form with a bioavailability of over 99.7% are considered objective quality features.

Dosage Forms & Intake

Vitamin D3 is available as drops (finely dosable, ideal for combining with a meal), as capsules and as tablets. In drop form, application is particularly practical; for some products, 1 drop daily is recommended. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, it is best taken with a fatty meal to support absorption. Information on the intake of vitamin D, portion size and intake rhythm can be found on the packaging.

Important: Vitamin D is fat-soluble and is stored by the body. Do not exceed the recommended amount; as a general guide, a safe upper limit for adults is 100 µg daily, and you should not dose uncontrollably high. In case of illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or uncertainty, seek medical advice before taking it.

Who is Vitamin D3 suitable for?

Vitamin D3 is especially interesting for anyone who gets little sunlight – for example, in the winter months, with a predominantly indoor daily routine, or in northern latitudes. Those who cover up a lot or rarely go outside also produce less vitamin D through the skin. A deficiency in vitamin D can negatively affect bone health in the long term and contribute to osteoporosis.

Whether and in what quantity a supplement is useful for you depends on your individual situation and needs and can best be clarified by a medically determined blood value that shows the vitamin D level or status. Taking high doses across the board is not the right approach – targeted and in a sensible quantity, however, is.

Buying Vitamin D3 – what should you look for?

Dosage & Form

Pay attention to a clear indication of the vitamin D3 amount per serving, the vitamin D content per serving and ideally in I.U. and/or µg, so that the daily dose can be better classified, and choose the form (drops, capsule, tablet) according to your preference.

For adults, the recommended daily dose is 800 I.U. of Vitamin D.

Pure or with K2

There are pure D3 products and D3+K2 combinations. Depending on the vitamin D preparations and other preparations, the ingredient list provides clarity.

Brand & Quality

Reputable manufacturers stand for transparent information and premium quality through traceable production and testing. At Best-Supps, we offer Vitamin D3 from selected brands, so you can more easily evaluate information, origin, and quality in comparison. Significant quality differences are particularly evident in the market.

Suitable Categories & Useful Supplements

Vitamin D3 is part of the vitamin range: an overview is offered by the main category Vitamins, and a wide spectrum by Multivitamins. Suitable micronutrients can be found under Minerals, and other products for well-being under Health.

Quality, Storage & Shelf Life

A good Vitamin D3 product can be recognized by a clear declaration of the quantity per serving as well as declared carrier oils such as MCT oil or sunflower oil. For storage: keep dry, sealed, protected from heat and light, and out of reach of children. The best-before date is on the packaging. Note: always store in a cool place and observe the packaging information.
